Burning Man: Nevada's Annual Instant City

This destination is only accessible for 10 days per year. Like a mirage in the desert, the Burning Man Arts Festival is fleeting. It appears and disappears in less than a fortnight. Each summer - during the final week of August that leads into the Labor Day weekend - thousands of digerati geeks, pyrotechnic enthusiasts, aging hippies and too-hip yuppies descend on a prehistoric dry lakebed in the Nevada desert known to insiders as Black Rock City. Here the fourth largest city in Nevada reaches its ritual climax on Saturday night when the giant “man” effigy is burned to the ground.

Tips in this Tour:
Gerlach, NV is the closest town to Burning Man, approximately 70 miles north of Reno, NV. Gas stations, bars, and a motel are the only services available in Gerlach.
There are special Burning Man shuttles from the Reno airport. Some other travel buses, from California and beyond, arrive at the event every year. Best to check the Burning Man website for updated schedules and more info.
The first step in planning is to bring all necessary food, camping gear and lots of liquids. Burning Man shuttles will make a supermarket stop en route or, if you are driving, stop at one of the many shopping plazas in Reno or Sparks.
Upon arriving at Burning Man it is possible to join with another theme camp if you are good at making friends, or create your own encampment wherever there is free space. There is plenty of room for all.
Burning Man is a "Leave No Trace" event, meaning everyone is responsible for packing out all of their own gear and garbage.
