Winter In Colorado's Steamboat Springs

Tucked into Routt National Forest in the northwest corner of Colorado, Steamboat Springs is so far off the beaten path you have to intend to get there! Its charming western character and hidden secrets are treasures for lucky adventurers. Explore the terrain with an expert, finding trails that only the locals use and naming the neighboring mountain ranges. Taste the bounty of small town flavor…  dabble in its Old West history, and see famous Olympic skiers who’ve put this hideaway on the map.

Tips in this Tour:
Choose one of two airports to fly into Steamboat Springs.  Denver airport (DIA) is 120 miles south, and a 3-hour drive through a truly scenic portion of Colorado. Steamboat/Hayden (HDN) airport, 25 miles west of town, is also a gorgeous and scenic option if you can handle the small planes.
Hot air balloon rides might seem like a cold way to spend your winter morning here, but bundled up under that warm hot-air furnace during the later winter month of March is a perfect way to see the valley from a bird's eye view.
Three words: layers, layers, layers! Without the humidity, 20 degrees doesn’t seem as cold here… still, the best way to make sure you stay warm is with several (five for me!) non-cotton layers under your ski jacket.
Blend in! One sure way to stick out like a sore thumb is to wear those Chewbacca boots and a full-length fur. Leave the Aspen clothing for further south and dress like a local in simple, functional clothing.
Look west from nearly any location to see the famous “Sleeping Giant” formation positioned at the west end of Lincoln Avenue downtown. With his snowy blanket, he’s the one that gives you that “Yampa Valley Curse.”
