China's Hawaii: Hainan Island

Warm days and sultry nights are the norm on tropical Hainan Island located just off the tip of mainland China in the South China Sea. You'll find white sand beaches, fresh seafood and succulent tropical fruit, along with a distinct island culture. Numerous hot springs bubble up and tropical rain forests cover much of the island. Over a hundred different herbs for traditional Chinese medicine are grown here as well as green tea, coffee, and some rare orchids. Hainan has not been widely discovered here in the west, but hurry up—the secret may not last for long!

Tips in this Tour:   Read More
People in Hainan observe an afternoon naptime. It's best to do as the locals do and rest in your hotel room from about 12:30-3:00 p.m. If you do try to shop or eat out, be prepared—you may have to wake up the workers!
The best time to visit is between November and March. The rainy season falls between May and October, but the resort of Sanya in the southernmost part of the island is usually warm and sunny year round.
If you visit Monkey Island near Sanya, beware! These monkeys run free and they will bite. They seem to get particularly agitated over green bottles so leave your water bottle behind.
This island has fantastic tropical fruit and fresh seafood. Be sure to try the chilled coconut milk that is drunk from the shell through a straw.
Hainan is a good place to buy pearls, although the ones you find for sale on the streets may not be high quality (or even real.) Good quality pearls can be bought at some of the higher end retail shops in both Sanya and Haikou.
