St. Augustine, Florida: America’s Oldest City

For a romantic getaway, a girlfriend weekend or a fun family vacation, think St. Augustine! Brimming with international character, history, art, attractions, great dining and more than a few ghosts, a visit to America’s oldest city is like going to Spain - without the jet lag! Located on the Atlantic coast just south of Jacksonville, and easily accessible by car or air, this city offers everything from a luxury retreat to budget-friendly options. If you are tired of theme park vacations, you will find the reality of narrow brick streets, ancient buildings and international dining to be a refreshing change.

Tips in this Tour:

Arrive at FlaglerCollege at 10 am or 2 pm for a free tour of the college’s public areas, including the rotunda, the parlor and the dining hall with its Tiffany windows and furnishings. Tours are student-led, so tipping is appreciated.
At the AlligatorFarmZoologicalPark, many of the animals are very close, (in fenced pens), and to an alligator, food is food. Don’t reach into the pens, and make sure small children don’t poke their fingers through the fence.
Many visitors are surprised by the heat and humidity of a Florida summer, so take the usual precautions of sunscreen, a hat and a bottle of water. The occasional ice cream stop helps, too!
Golfers may want to take the short drive north on I-95 to the World Golf Hall of Fame. For one admission price, you can explore the history of golf, enjoy a film in the IMAX Theater, and play a round on the 18-hole natural grass putting course.
VisitingAnastasiaState Park, across the river from St. Augustine, is a great way to spend a day. There are 4 miles of beaches, camping, nature trails, water sports, and the archaeological site where the coquina rock was mined to create the Castillo de San Marcos.
