Fort Lauderdale: More Than Spring Break!

Situated in the heart of Florida’s Gold Coast, Fort Lauderdale presents a wealth of diverse activities - and you don’t have to be wealthy to enjoy them! Relax on the beach and work on an envy-producing tan… savor the perfect empanada or dine al fresco at a historic landmark. Buy a beach wrap or a unique piece of artwork… join locals dancing to jazz in the park under the glorious South Florida sky. Be a kid again at a hands-on museum, and learn how in little more than a century this area was completely transformed. The question becomes: What to do this time, and what to leave for next?

Tips in this Tour:
The wet season in South Florida is from June through November. During these months, afternoon storms - often heavy ones - are common. If you visit during these months, plan outdoor activities for earlier in the day.
From 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the first Sunday of every month, you can enjoy free music from top local artists during “Jazz Brunch in the Park” at Himmarshee and 5thAvenue, across from the Museum of Discovery and Science in Ft.Lauderdale’s Arts District. Locals arrive early to grab the best spots to stretch out and unload their coolers.
Consider carefully before renting a car. If you plan to stay within the areas covered in this tour, you’ll do better using taxis (land and water,) the free shuttles, and your feet. Construction, congestion, and special events can make driving and parking challenging at times.
Getting your bearings, however, is easy. The ocean is east. Avenues run north/south (with Andrews Avenue dividing “east” from “west”,) while streets run east/west. Do note though that most major streets and avenues have 2 – sometimes even 3 – names. The street you are looking for may have an alias! (2nd Street, for example, becomes Himmarshee as you head west.)
Put yourself on the Walk of Fame! You may never have your footprints outside of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, but you can buy a brick with your name or another’s on it, to be placed on the brick walk fronting the New River. Your tax-deductible donation benefits the Riverwalk Trust. Visit http://www.goriverwalk.com/bricks.htm for information. Immortalize your trip; buy a brick!
