There Is Only One Berkeley

The oldest and arguably the most prestigious school in the University of California system is UC Berkeley, or "Cal," as it is affectionately known by students and alumni. Berkeley, the city, grew up around Berkeley, the university, beginning in the mid-19th century. University and city endured Vietnam anti-war protests and brutal police confrontations, but turned out for the better with the founding of People's Park. Fashion and social movements also have their birthplace at Berkeley. In national studies conducted for decades, the students and residents of Berkeley consistently measure as the most politically liberal people in the nation.

Tips in this Tour:   Read More
UC Berkeley offers very limited parking on or around the campus. Visitors are advised to use public transportation whenever possible. The Downtown Berkeley BART station is only a short distance from the campus west entrance.
Visitor Services provides information about the campus and conducts guided walking tours for individuals and groups. General campus tours are offered Mon-Sat at 10am and Sunday at 1pm. Mon–Fri tours begin at the Visitor Center located at the corner of Oxford and University. Weekend tours begin at Sather Tower (Campanile). All tours require online reservation.
Don't miss the spin-off "People's Park Annex," which was established at the same time as People's Park by activist citizens of Berkeley. It is on a strip of land above the BART subway construction along Hearst Avenue, northwest of the UC campus. The land had been intended for development, but was peacefully turned over to the City of Berkeley and is now Ohlone Park.
Bring your bicycle on the BART or rent a bike downtown. Berkeley has modified its original grid roadway structure through the use of diverters, moving most traffic out of neighborhoods and onto arterial roads. Perfect for urban cyclists, Berkeley maintains a separate grid of arterial streets for bicycles, called "Bicycle Boulevards," with bike lanes and far less car traffic than the major arterial streets.
There are 2 east-west main roads that intersect Interstate 80 with access to Berkeley. University Avenue runs from Berkeley's bay shore, past the main arterial streets San Pablo Avenue, MLK Way, and Shattuck Avenue before reaching the UC campus. Ashby Avenue (Highway 13), which also runs from Berkeley's bay shore to the hills, connects with the Warren Freeway and Highway 24 leading to the Caldecott Tunnel.
