San Francisco's North Beach

San Francisco’s easy-to-walk Italian neighborhood, North Beach, lies between Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf. Often sunny in both climate and character, the area feels quite European. Visit a bookstore which was at the forefront of the counterculture movement. Walk along streets lined with outdoor cafés, Italian delicatessens, bakeries, innovative restaurants, specialty boutiques, churches, and parks. Explore back streets, smell coffee roasting, hear Italian spoken, taste homemade gelato and chocolate. Hear fascinating anecdotes reflecting a colorful past, be privy to insiders’ favorite haunts, and enjoy a panoramic city view from atop Telegraph Hill.

Tips in this Tour:   Read More
Pick up picnic fixings at Giordano Bros. (303 Columbus Ave.) or Molinari's (373 Columbus Ave.), grab a bench in nearby Washington Square Park (Columbus Ave. at Union St.), and enjoy a leisurely lunch.
Monday through Saturday are the best days to visit North Beach. On Sunday some of the best attractions are closed (Molinari's Deli for example).
If you're walking to Coit Tower atop Telegraph Hill, but your feet give out before your enthusiasm does, you can hop on the #39 bus at Stockton and Union Streets.
If you're planning on visiting North Beach, arrive early and stay late. There's a lot more to see in this neighborhood than its small area on the map would indicate.
Keep in mind that all things may not be logical. Washington Square Park, for example, is not square at all, and has no statue of George Washington, but rather one of Benjamin Franklin.
