Newfound Gap Road And The Great Smoky Mountains


 

The 30-mile Newfound Gap Road is the most popular route through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, providing access to scenic vistas, including the 360-degree views from the Smokies' highest peak, Clingman's Dome.  Along the way are opportunities for easy hikes, wildlife viewing, and access to the region's human history.

Tips in this Tour:
Avoid the Newfound Gap Road in the busy summer months and during fall color season when it can actually be subject to traffic jams.  Plan your trip for spring, late fall, or winter.
Allow at least a half day for the drive if you want to take in the major sights at the visitor centers as well as stop at overlooks and take the short hike to the Clingman's Dome observation tower.
Keep in mind there are no dining or lodging services in the park.  Pack a picnic lunch, and plan to stay in Cherokee or Gatlinburg if you're not camping.
One of the best places to spot black bears along this route is in the vicinity of the Smokemont Campground.  But remember to keep your distance.  Never approach wildlife.
Bring binoculars for taking in the views at Newfound Gap and Clingman's Dome.
