San Francisco's Ferry Building And Embarcadero

San Francisco's landmark Ferry Building has been welcoming visitors to the "City by the Bay" for more than 100 years. With its recent transformation into a foodie mecca, thousands again walk its grand halls, enjoying shops and restaurants that celebrate the bounty of northern California. The historic Embarcadero waterfront is also undergoing a renaissance, with lovely new palm tree-lined promenades, historic exhibits, and piers to take in bay and bridge views. This is a delightful place for a quick getaway!

Tips in this Tour:
Visit the Ferry Building on Tuesdays or Saturdays when the farmer's market is in full swing, hosting dozens of farmers and food producers from all over Northern California. City Guides offers its free 45-minute history tour at noon.
On Tuesdays and Saturdays, CUESA, which operates the market, offers a Veggie Valet that allows you to drop off heavy groceries while you shop or retrieve your car. Check at the information booth in front of the Ferry Building for the service, as well as validation for parking lots nearby.
When you see samples at the farmer's market or in the Ferry Building marketplace, stop, taste, and ask questions. Farmers and food artisans are happy to talk about what they've produced. It's a delightful way to learn how local, organic food is grown.
As you stroll the promenade along the Embarcadero, take time to read the many markers that contain a wealth of old photos and fascinating information about shipping and transportation history.
For longer getaways, take a ferry to Sausalito or Tiburon, or rent a bicycle and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge to those Marin County towns. Then return by ferryboat.
