The usual image that tourists have of Rio is of the white sandy beaches and luxurious apartments at Copacabana and Ipanema. This tour reveals the area where the city originated after the arrival of the Portuguese colonizers in the 16th century. Rio would become the capital of a thriving new colony and later the seat of a vast commercial empire with links to four other continents. The most important historical buildings and their cultural heritage have been preserved in excellent condition, allowing the visitor to obtain an accurate description of Brazil´s past.

Tips in this Tour:
Beware of Rio de Janeiro´s aggressive drivers (both of cars and motocycles). They rarely respect pedestrians crossing the street. Wait patiently for the green lights to allow you to get to the other side.
At present US$5 is the entry fee for both the "Light and Sound Show" at the Do Carmo Church and the Boat trip to Fiscal Island.
Beware of Rio´s uneven pavements and streets. Most have been made with hundreds of golf ball size stones called "Portuguese stones" that frequently get loose and leave dangerous holes in the ground.
Always have small change available such as the real 5 and 10 bank notes. Avoid wasting time and hassles by paying with the real 50 or 100 bills. (The real is the name of the currency. It means "royal" in Portuguese.)
