The Splendor Of New York City’s Central Park


 

Located in the urban heart of New York City, Central Park is 2.6 miles long by a half mile wide, covers 843 acres, and comprises 6% of Manhattan. As one of the most visited city parks in the United States, Central Park is world famous, appearing in many movies and television shows. Since planning started in the mid-19th century, Central Park has inspired American civic architects to include museums and other public attractions in their park designs. Wild and landscaped, scenic and cultural, housing the Natural History and MET museums, Central Park is a genuine New York City landmark.

Tips in this Tour:
Central Park stretches from 59th Street on the southern side to 110th Street at the northern end, and is bookended between 5th Avenue on the Upper East Side and Central Park West (8thAve.) on the Upper West Side. Its hours of operation are from 6:00 am until 1:00 am.
The Park Drive is closed to vehicular traffic during weekdays from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm, and then all night from 7:00 pm until 7:00 am. Weekends are fully closed from 7:00 pm on Friday until 7:00 am Monday morning. All roads are closed on holidays: from 7:00 pm the night before until 7:00 am the day after. When roads are open to vehicular traffic. The speed limit is 25 mph.
All tennis players must have a season or a single-play one-time use permit to play on the courts. Permits can be purchased at the Arsenal, located inside the Park at Fifth Avenue and 64thStreet. Permits are issued from the last week in March and are good for use until the end of the season. The Arsenal is open Monday through Saturday in April through June, and Monday through Friday in July through November.

Central Park offers a wide array of sport activities to enjoy. In the winter visitors can go skating at either Wollman or Lasker Rinks. Anyone can get a Discovery Day pack from the North Meadow Recreation Center which includes a variety of sporting equipment. There are basketball courts, tennis courts, handball courts, and 26 softball and baseball fields.
