Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest refuges in Florida. It's ironic that one of the most secure, futuristic government facilities is surrounded by the most pristine landscape in central Florida. Water - fresh, salt, and brackish estuary - and climate that ranges from temperate to subtropical create an unbelievable species diversity. There are over 500 kinds of animal life and 1,000 plant varieties, 15 of which are on the threatened or endangered list. This tour will guide you to the best birding spots and the most likely places to view wildlife in central Florida.

Tips in this Tour:   Read More
Be sure to bring lots of sunscreen, bug repellant, water, and any other items you will need. There is just the one gift shop and no restaurants on the refuge. Carrying your cell phone in case of an emergency is a good idea also.
Fall and winter are the best times to visit the refuge. Morning and evening are the best times of day. However, you are sure to see an abundance of wildlife at any time.
Wearing drab clothing, limiting talking on trails, and avoiding unnecessary noise will increase you chances of seeing wildlife.
Do not attempt to touch or feed wildlife. They are wild animals. not pets.
Be sure to check for shuttle launches or landings as the refuge closes for three days before a launch, as well as the day of a landing.
