Chicago’s Lincoln Park

Along with a myriad of recreational facilities, the Lake Michigan-fronting Lincoln Park includes a number of harbors for sail or motor boats, as well as public beaches. There are landscaped gardens, a zoo, the Conservatory, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the Chicago History Museum, and the Theater on the Lake with regular outdoor performances during the summer. But as we explore deeper into the fabric of this amazing urban oasis we’ll discover nature reserves, charming restaurants, and some of the best statuary found in Chicago. Let’s explore the full width and breadth of Chicago’s largest public park. Even lifetime Chicago natives will discover new aspects of the park in this comprehensive tour.

Tips in this Tour:

The expansive Lincoln Park stretches along the lakefront from North Avenue in the southern extremity to Foster Avenue, just north of the Lake Shore Drive terminus at North Hollywood Avenue. The farther north you travel, the less used the park is by people. It's where more nature reserves are found.

Recreational facilities include 15 baseball areas, 6 basketball courts, 2 softball fields, 35 tennis courts, 163 volleyball courts, field houses, and a golf course.

The Chicago History Museum is located at 1601 N. Clark Street at North Avenue in Lincoln Park. CHS general information line: (312) 642-4600.

The Lincoln Park Conservatory and botanical garden is located at 2391 North Stockton Drive, next to the Lincoln Park Zoo, in Chicago. It is open daily; admission is free. Phone: (312) 742-7736.

Since Lincoln Park is Chicago’s largest park--visited by over 20 million visitors each year and second only to Central Park in New York City--it can be very busy on weekends and nice weather days. Thus, parking can be difficult or expensive. Try to arrive early to get one of the free parking spaces along North Stockton Street, or come by public transit.
