No other city in the United States has the instant recognition of glitzy Las Vegas, Nevada. Unique for its almost exclusive reliance on the casino entertainment industry, Las Vegas is a city constantly redefining itself as new developers incessantly try to out-dazzle their competitors. The result is a mishmash of towering casino-hotels and blazing bright signs. Some of the shows in Las Vegas are one-of-a-kind, as well as some of the drinking establishments, but if we are to look beyond downtown and the Strip we will find Las Vegas is situated in a beautiful desert environment where family fun and outdoor adventure abounds.

Although Las Vegas is commonly referred to as “Sin City,” many of the adult exotic clubs are neatly tucked away from the Strip, unlike legalized gambling which is always in full view. Don’t be tricked into thinking Vegas is just Sin City, because it happens to also reside in an enchanting high desert environment. Make sure to visit Red Rock Canyon and the Hoover Dam. Both have excellent Visitor Centers to accommodate tourism.
It has been said that the only difference between Wall Street and Las Vegas is “a matter of interior decoration.” If you plan to gamble in Las Vegas remember the House always has the advantage, after all, that’s how those massive casinos are built. If you choose to gamble, just do it for the entertainment value, never to increase your net worth.
The Red Rock Visitor Center is open 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. every day. There is a nominal car day-use fee to enter, which also includes access to the 13-mile Scenic Drive. The entrance to both are located just off State Route 159, or Charleston Boulevard, about 20 miles due west of the city. In the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks there is a significant security presence concerning the vehicular crossing of Hoover Dam. Because of the attack, the Hoover Dam Bypass project was expedited. Truck traffic across Hoover Dam is presently restricted. All motorists are briefly stopped and checked, while some types of vehicles are inspected prior to crossing the dam. Semi-trailer trucks, buses carrying luggage, and enclosed-box trucks over 40 feet long are not allowed to cross the dam at all. Private cars and pedestrians are allowed to cross the dam.
