Michigan's Magical Mackinac Island

A quick ferry ride to this scenic Great Lakes island is a fascinating and fun trip back in time. Hop on a bicycle or a horse-drawn carriage to explore Mackinac’s auto-free escape, where fur traders gathered in the 1600s, colonial soldiers occupied a fort high on the bluffs in the 1700s, and wealthy visitors “summered” in the 1800s. Today, it’s a great 21st-century destination, with its well-preserved fort and mansions, hundreds of acres of forest and beach, and a Victorian downtown filled with great shopping and dining.

Tips in this Tour:
Some visitors mistakenly believe that the elegant (and expensive) Grand Hotel is the only lodging on Mackinac Island. Not true - there’s a range of accommodations on the island, from simple bed-and-breakfast inns to resorts. There’s no camping, though.
It’s easy to visit Mackinac Island as a day trip. Ferries make the half-hour crossing at least once an hour in the summer months, departing the mainland as early as 7 or 8 in the morning and returning as late as 9 at night. That’s plenty of time to enjoy much of what Mackinac has to offer.
You can save a few bucks buying your ferry tickets to Mackinac Island online. You don’t even have to specify which ferry times you want. The three ferry lines are Arnold Transit (arnoldline.com), Shepler’s (sheplersferry.com) and Star Line (mackinacferry.com).
If you enjoy history, consider buying the Mackinac Triple Choice ticket when you pay your admission to Fort Mackinac. It’s a good deal that will also grant you admission into two excellent historic state parks - Colonial Michilimackinac and Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park - and a neat old lighthouse in Mackinaw City.
The Mackinac Island ferry lines also offer sunset and other sightseeing cruises in the Straits of Mackinac. Shepler’s has a particularly good Lighthouse Cruise that sails past several of the old historic lights in Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. It’s the only way to get an up-close look unless you have your own boat.
The Grand Hotel’s time-capsule setting made it the perfect location for the 1980 film "Somewhere in Time." The time-travel romance starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour became a cult classic. Every October, fans reunite at the hotel for its popular Somewhere in Time Weekend. Events include a Celebrity Panel, Autograph Session, Movie Location Tour, Costume Promenade, and programs on Edwardian fashion and lifestyle.  It is a glittering event unlike any other at Grand Hotel, an extraordinary finale to their season.
